Friends have designed and built their own CNC machine (computerized 3D carving). At PrairieBench.com, we had the opportunity to pass along some new designs to our patrons.

We’ve run coasters, throne backboards, shields, address signs, wall hangings and interior decor. Now we can design complex carving paths and produce art and functional wood creations.

This is a street sign done on Red Cedar of for a landmark address in the Pacific Northwest: Columbia Street, New Westminster, BC.

Using a beautiful example of live edge red cedar, we designed a retro style street plaque and engraved it about 1/2″ deep. The ironwork is also custom and for that we used 3/4″ flatbar and tapped hangers for display.

The sign is currently on display at the Urban Man Cave on Columbia Street in New Westminster across from the New Westminster Skytrain Station.

This sign is intended for interior decor even though it is fully capable of withstanding years of weather outdoors.

Red Cedar
Finished in natural tone and polyurethane.

Hall Coat Rack Bench

Take a look at our new Hall Coat Rack Bench, sometimes called a ‘hall tree’, but we didn’t want to confuse it with the furniture we make out of actual tree branches.

It’s tall and narrow and designed custom to fit a specific space at the side entry of a residence. 18″ deep x 23″ wide and 76″ tall (over six feet). The seat height is 17″. It include a shoe shelf underneath the plank seat. We wanted something a little more elegant and ornate and the client selected a rich walnut color to contrast with the bright surroundings and window. We gave the spruce design our Prairie Bench storybook treatment and turned it into a period piece perhaps from a castle or ancient church. This is what we do with reclaimed and recycled wood.

Garden Picture Frame and Mirror

Another piece of wood on the todo pile was this interesting live edge cut of hemlock. There wasn’t enough length to create a table and the wood grain is interesting enough that in this case, form doesn’t need function. We’ve dubbed it the Garden Picture Frame.

The piece is 30″ square, hand ground and finished in weather resistant Prairie Bench Storybook finish. We might commission a painting, but for now it will sit on a rough cut easel and provide a simple window on imagination.

Crown Throne

Prairie Bench has designed another replica throne for use on stage and in traveling campaigns… it’s portable!

The Crown Throne is 6′ tall, 27″ wide, with a seat height of 18″. The throne is for traveling and comes apart in five pieces. It takes less than a minute to set up or dismantle, making the Crown Throne a piece of furniture ideal for royalty on the move.

Designed in reclaimed spruce headed for the chipper, we take pride in giving new life to used wood and preserving the trees we have. The finish is Prairie Bench Storybook with rich walnut tones. There are 13 glass ‘onyx’ jewels on the backboard and the crown is positioned to hover over his or her highness. The middle of the backboard and frontspiece are open in case the patron requires some custom engraving such as a name or crest. The armrests are beveled in an elegant design and the seat is hand ground for comfort.

The component parts are left side, right side, frontspiece, seat and backboard and the entire throne weighs less than 20 kgs.
