Designed in reclaimed spruce headed for the chipper, we take pride in giving new life to used wood and preserving the trees we have. The finish is Prairie Bench Storybook with rich walnut tones. There are 13 glass ‘onyx’ jewels on the backboard and the crown is positioned to hover over his or her highness. The middle of the backboard and frontspiece are open in case the patron requires some custom engraving such as a name or crest. The armrests are beveled in an elegant design and the seat is hand ground for comfort.

Cedar Coffee Table

prairie_bench_cedar_coffee

A client asked for a cedar coffee table. They brought us a large cedar plank, approximately 7 feet long, two feet wide x 4 inches thick, that was still quite wet. We decided to make it right away and the slab can dry on their patio. There was a nice knot on the cut side of the slab, so this became the center point for the design. We chopped the ends at ten degrees on the big miter saw using special rollers to handle the weight. Then we re-cut the ends of the slab from the opposite direction at twenty degrees. These two angles, one half of the other, make the design symmetrical and balanced. Because of the weight of the legs, four inch aggressive screws were used with glue to lock the wood together from below. We didn’t want dowels interrupting the beautiful grain on this specimen. Cedar has long strands and will crack and split with time and that’s part of the look. Because the wood is still carrying a lot of water,  we only applied finish to the top and ends of the wood. The underside and inside legs can stay open for evaporation.  A table this size will drink up lots of finish over the years.

Cedar Benches

These are approximately 48″ long and 15″ wide x 18″ tall. Ideal for hallways, entry ways, and patios. The 2″ thick cedar slabs are finished to 180 grit and coated in clear poly. The legs are hand fashioned from the same slab and with bark highlights.

Reflection Bench

The Reflection Bench designed itself. The seat and back came from one piece of reclaimed spruce tree. During the finishing process, the blond blaze through the center of the timber was accentuated and then the frame was built to enhance this feature. The result is a shimmering look with the back reflected in the seat. A single, ergonomic arm rest is used to give the bench an open, welcoming feel. Also, affirmations of observation, vista, vantage, foresight and understanding are scribed in the joinery. This is a unique timber from an individual tree and rare to see this tone and contrast in a solid piece of wood.

The Reflection Bench is finished in tung and rosewood oils to preserve the natural look and feel.
